What the pattern tells you
Buy-side and trading firms open first. If you are aiming for a hedge fund or trading firm, your season starts in July. Several of the July firms run rolling processes, so the first few weeks count. Many hire software engineers on the same timetable; see when tech summer internships open.
Bulge bracket banks cluster in August and September. Goldman Sachs, Barclays and Bank of America opened in August; UBS, Citi, Deutsche Bank and HSBC in September. Have your CV and cover letter and online test practice done before term starts.
Boutiques and elite boutiques spread across the season. Evercore and LionTree opened in August, Lazard, PJT Partners and Greenhill in September. Don't assume a smaller firm opens later.
Applying early matters more than the deadline
Many banks review applications on a rolling basis, and some close their process early once they have enough strong candidates. The deadline on a posting is the latest you can apply, not a target. Online tests often follow soon after you apply, so prepare for numerical reasoning and situational judgement tests before you submit.
