What the pattern tells you
Quant firms go first. If you are interested in software engineering or quant development at a trading firm, your season starts in July, before most students have thought about internships. Jane Street opened in June. For trading roles at the same firms, see when finance summer internships open.
Big tech lands in August and September. Google, Apple, Stripe and Palantir opened in August; Amazon, Spotify and Figma in September. Have your CV and a couple of polished projects ready by the end of the summer holidays.
October is the busiest month by count. More employers opened in October than any other month, including Microsoft, Arm and Databricks. Late doesn't mean less competitive: these roles still fill, and many close before Christmas.
When do tech internship applications close?
When we checked on 29 October 2026, deadlines for the tech internships still open ran to mid-December 2026, and roughly a third of them were rolling: reviewed as they arrive and closed early once the firm has enough. In practice the deadline on the posting is the latest you can apply, not the best time to.
Many firms send an online coding test soon after you apply, so prepare for one before you submit rather than after.
