Frequently asked questions
How is a UK degree classification calculated?
- Most UK universities weight each year differently, often with the final year counting most, and award a First for 70% and above, a 2:1 for 60 to 69%, a 2:2 for 50 to 59% and a Third for 40 to 49%. Rules vary by university, so check your own handbook; the grades tracker lets you set the weights your course uses.

Does it work with placement years?
- Yes. You can weight any year at 0%, for example a pass/fail placement year.
Why do applications ask for my grades?
- Many graduate schemes and internships ask for a predicted or achieved classification and sometimes module marks. Having them in one place makes forms quicker to fill in.
Do graduate schemes and internships require a 2:1?
- Many large employers ask for a predicted or achieved 2:1, and some banks and law firms also look at A-level grades, while others have dropped a minimum altogether. Check each posting. The grades tracker shows the classification you are on track for, so you know what to put on the form.
What mark do I need for a 2:1?
- At most UK universities a 2:1 is a weighted average of 60% to 69%. Set 2:1 as your target in the grades tracker and it shows your current average against that mark.
Can I track individual assessments within a module?
- Yes. Each module holds its own assessments with their weights and marks, and the module average is worked out from them.
