Internship Tracker: Spreadsheet vs Notion vs LucidTrack
Tracking internship applications in a spreadsheet or Notion template? Where templates break down, and why students move to LucidTrack's free tracker.
An internship tracker spreadsheet works until about your tenth application; after that, a purpose-built tracker like LucidTrack stops deadlines and details slipping. Spreadsheets and Notion templates are free and flexible, but every row is typed by hand, nothing tells you when a role opens, and nothing reminds you what's due. LucidTrack fills itself from the roles you apply to, keeps each application's rounds and deadlines, and shows how your season is going. It's free.
We make LucidTrack. The spreadsheet and Notion details below come from two popular templates: Spreadsheet Daddy's free job application tracker, and Notion Everything's Notion job application tracker. For dedicated trackers like Trackr and Bright Network, see the best internship trackers in the UK.
What each one covers in an application

Where an internship tracker spreadsheet breaks down
A typical internship tracker spreadsheet has a row per application and columns for the company, role, link, date applied, status, interview dates, outcome and notes. Spreadsheet Daddy's free template, for Excel and Google Sheets, has exactly that, with statuses such as applied, interview scheduled and rejected. By the middle of application season, four things go wrong:
- Every row is typed by hand. Copying the company, role, deadline and link for thirty applications takes hours you'd rather spend on the applications.
- One status per row. Real applications have rounds: an online test, then a video interview, then an assessment centre, each with its own deadline. A single status column can't show where you are in each.
- Nothing reminds you. A deadline in a cell doesn't warn you that it's in three days.
- It doesn't find roles. You still need somewhere else to find out what's open.
Notion templates have the same problem
Notion templates look nicer than a spreadsheet. Notion Everything's job application tracker, for example, has a list, a kanban board by status, and tables for companies and contacts. But it's still manual entry, with no alerts, no reminders and no job listings, and it's one more app to keep open during application season.
Why students move to LucidTrack
LucidTrack is built around how UK early careers recruitment actually runs: an initial application, then online tests, video interviews and assessment centres, each with its own deadline.
- Roles go in from the board. Apply from a tracker like finance internships or technology internships and the role lands in your tracker with its deadline and job description. The Chrome extension does the same for any careers page.
- Rounds, not just a status. Each application keeps its own rounds, each with a status and a date, and your deadlines are sorted by what's due next.
- It remembers for you. Which CV you sent, what the job description said, and when you last heard back. An application with no update for four weeks is marked ghosted.
- It shows how your season is going. Offers, rejections, applications in progress and your pass rate with each assessment provider, counted for you.
The tracker is free with no limit on applications. Pro adds email job alerts, calendar sync for deadlines and interviews, AI CV and writing tools, and the grades tracker.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free internship tracker template?
LucidTrack is a free internship tracker that does everything a template does and more: it adds roles from the job board, keeps every round and deadline, and counts how your season is going, with no limit on applications.
What should an internship tracker include?
For each application: the company and role, the date you applied, the deadline, the CV you sent, the job description, every round (online test, video interview, assessment centre) with its date and status, and the outcome. LucidTrack keeps all of these for you.
Can I move from a spreadsheet to LucidTrack mid-season?
Yes. Add the applications you've already made by hand, then add new ones from the job board or the Chrome extension as you apply.
