Location: Barrow (Cumbria). We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – however for this role you will be expected to attend your site 3-5 days per week.

Salary: £34,000 Per Annum + £2,000 Welcome Bonus

Role description 

As a Graduate Submarines Nuclear Safety Regulation Engineer, you will support the safe design, construction and operation of nuclear-powered submarines by helping to ensure compliance with nuclear safety and environmental regulations. Working within a highly regulated industry, you will develop an understanding of nuclear safety principles, regulatory requirements and the processes used to demonstrate safe operation. You will collaborate with a range of engineering and project teams, contributing to the development of safety cases and regulatory submissions that support key programme milestones. This role provides an excellent opportunity to build specialist knowledge while contributing to nationally significant defence programmes and maintaining the highest standards of nuclear safety.

Core duties 

  • Support the provision of nuclear safety advice and guidance to departments, project teams and key stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Nuclear Safety documentation in accordance with programme and project requirements.
  • Assist in demonstrating compliance with applicable nuclear, environmental and regulatory standards.
  • Develop an understanding of UK Nuclear Law, the regulatory framework and nuclear industry best practice.
  • Support engineering and safety activities that enable the safe delivery of submarine programmes.
  • Contribute to problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives by helping to develop innovative engineering and safety solutions.

All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.

Qualification requirements

As a minimum requirement you must have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree or a pass at Master’s level in the following subjects: Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or applicable STEM subject.
